HOME BURNING OF THE WITCH THE DOLOCHER EATEN ALIVE HELLFIRE CREDITS

ABOUT US

Baile Scátha Cliath is a project about telling stories. Specifically, it is an attempt to tell four traditional Dublin folk tales in a contemporary and dynamic way. As a group, we wished to repurpose these existing narratives using a wide range of media techniques. Exposure to the works of artists such as Lotte Reiniger and Anthony Lucas, encountered during the course of our multimedia studies, led us to the decision to pursue an animated approach when reimagining these stories.

The resulting project is a collection of short animated films based on stories and urban legends drawn from Dublin’s dark history. To accomplish this, the group sought to employ a mixture of stop-motion animation, silhouette animation and digital animation; these techniques, coupled with voice over narration and Foley sound effects, work to emphasise the sinister nature at the heart of these stories. The resulting animations are hosted on a dedicated website and presented in the form of an interactive map of Dublin City. Supplementary passages of text help to contextualise the stories and situate them within the broader history of Dublin.

The team members that brought the project to fruition are drawn from a diverse set of academic and professional backgrounds. The resulting suite of skills allowed the production team to engage both critically and creatively in bringing Baile Scátha Cliath to life.
